Sensing Diagnostic Module SDM

Sensing Diagnostic Module SDM

The SDM is a microprocessor and the controller for the entire airbag system, typically mounted under either the instrument panel or the front seat. The primary purpose of the SDM is to initiate the deployment of a particular airbag module. When airbag deployment is warranted during impact, the SDM will send current to the appropriate airbag module for deployment. The SDM serves several other functions in addition to the control of the airbag deployment:

1. Continuously monitors the operational status of the airbag electrical circuits
2. Controls the airbag warning lamp
3.  Maintains and operates an energy reserve
 4.Stores diagnostic codes, and
 5. Records impact events and other vehicle specific information

SDM Handling Precautions

The SDM is sensitive to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), and the shipping box is labeled. When handling an ESD sensitive part, follow these guidelines to reduce the possible build-up of an electrostatic charge:

Do not open the package for the SDM until it is time to install it in the vehicle. Avoid touching the SDM electrical terminals with a finger or a tool.  Before removing the SDM from its package, ground the package to a known good ground on the vehicle. Always touch a known good ground before handling the SDM. This should be repeated while touching the SDM, sliding across a seat sitting down, or getting up, or walking.
